Back to Downton Day 30th April 2011
I have been fortunate to be present at every
event held at Downton since 2008. This year I think there were more
cars than ever at the D.E.W.S event which also coincides with the 35th
anniversary of Harris Motorsport which is run by Steve & Brenda
Harris.
Steve Harris was a Downton employee from 1964 until 1971 & again1975– 1976 , when Downton Engineering closed he set up his own
business and over the years has had a very full & successful
competition calendar each year. He now helps organise the DEWS Hillclimb
Sprint Speed Series which mainly takes place at venues in the South West at the
moment . 20 Mini owners have already signed up for the series which is a very
friendly way of having fun. Check out
the website at www.dewsc.org.uk
As usual there were two awards on the
day. After a great deal of thought &
deliberation with so many nice examples to choose from the winners of the
awards were "Best Downton Car" MGC
During the day a competition was run to guess
the number of balloons in Alan Booth's lovely Mk 2 S. The winner was a
very young lady Olivia with a guess of 90 balloons ,who became very shy in her father's arms
when receiving her prize of £50. The Dews F1 Silverstone
challenge run by David Frampton was won by Karl Chard but he kindly allowed his
trophy to go to Oliver Booth who was the closest junior using an easier
programme. It has been decided for next year to have 3 classes. Refreshment
were served during the day by Nicola Harris, Barbara Mark, Peter Styles also
lent a hand later in the day after he had organised the display of all the cars
on show. John & Sue Frampton ran a Tombola stall in the marquee, Nigel
& Stuart Samson were kept busy all day serving up delicious beefburgers
& sausages baps.
The MG car club very kindly presented the club
with a limited edition drawing by P Wilford. It is nice to see so many MG’s
turn up to support the DEWS event each year . We hope to see even more of
you for 2012. The
next day the “Fovant Badges “ car run took
place of approx 53 miles starting from the Downton Sports Centre ably led (!)
by Nigel Samson taking in some of the best Wiltshire & Dorset countryside .
Fovant Badges in the hills of Wiltshire , including the challenge of Zig Zag Hill in Dorset Finishing at Nine Yews (Harris Motorsport)
where refreshments were provided & delicious cakes made by Kate Crouch,
where sitting & chatting went on for some time, a good time was had by all. |

DEWS AGM & Awards Evening Class Awards were presented to:Paul Holloway, Steve Harris, Peter Knight, Vince Stone, Derek Kessell, Gordon Iles, Mike Mark, Barbara Alexander Mark, and the Hedley Hutching Novice shield went to Adam Gallaway.
Nicky Harris collected an award on behalf of Alan
Peskett as he was unable to attend. Chairman's cup was awarded jointly
this year to Sue Frampton & Brenda Harris for all their hard work during
the year.
The awards were presented by Jerry Sturman the voice behind the Speed Scene , followed by Jerry reflecting on his time not only as a competitor & engine building /car preparation, but also his later years as a commentator which was well received by all.
A buffet was served after which followed a very competitive knockout skittles match, eventually won by Ian Hunt who kindly donated the winnings to charity. Throughout the evening Sue, John & David Frampton ran a Tombola , everyone tried to win the de-icer ready for the trip home!! Many thanks to everyone for making it such an enjoyable evening.
